The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has released its statement responding to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s calling of the 2025 federal election.

The statement highlights the need for Catholics to vote in solidarity to create, in the words of Pope St John Paul II, “a civilisation of love.”

Albanese called the election on 28 March and said it will be held Saturday, 3 May.

The bishops’ four-page statement emphasises Catholic values and highlights key issues voters should keep in mind ahead of election day.

Broken into segments, the statements picks out the dignity and value of every human being; fairness, justice and the common good; religious freedom and religious conscience rights; and responsible stewardship of God’s creation as key issues.

Some of the issues under these headings include a right to live in accordance with faith-based values, upholding the sanctity of life, improving healthcare, and strengthening environmental policies.

The statement, which can read here, also includes a prayer for the election.

Australian Catholic Bishops Conference President, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, commended the statement to all people of good will.

“As political discourse becomes increasingly polarised, we must commit ourselves to conscientious voting, carefully considering the facts and supporting policies that improve the lives of all, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged,” Archbishop Costelloe said.

Freedom for Faith will host a series of forums across the country for people who wish to discuss election and party policies with their local members.

They are being hosted by the churches of the electorate, to allow politicians to hear and respond the concerns of the Christian community.
