Mission Australia is urgently seeking warm clothing and blankets after a fire in Surry Hills forced 40 people in crisis accommodation to evacuate, who cannot return until the fire damage is repaired and the building deemed safe.

Most residents took very minimal belongings with them on 25 June, while those
living on the ground floor, in proximity to the fire, had almost nothing.

“As we approach winter the most urgent need is warm clothing and blankets,” said Emma Perret, Projects manager for Mission Australia.

“We give these to people sleeping rough, those living in crisis accommodation or in public housing who live on small government subsidies and often can’t use heaters due to rising electricity costs.”

Donations of new clothing and blankets can be brought to St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorebank or, alternatively, monetary donations made to Somascan Missions will be
used to purchase these items for those in need.

Mission Australia is a non-denominational Christian charity that has exists to help those who are experiencing homelessness, living with mental illness or in need support with their alcohol and other drug use.
