Nicaraguan dictatorship bans priests from anointing the sick in hospitals

Most read

People hospitalised in Nicaragua can no longer receive the anointing of the sick. This is the latest measure of the Ortega regime, where priests are being prohibited from visiting public hospitals to administer the sacrament.

Nicaraguan lawyer in exile, Martha Patricia, has been speaking out against government measures like these on her social media. For years she’s been documenting the persecution of Catholics through her contacts in the country.

She recently told local media La Prensa that the clergy are “under surveillance” and that the police are “besieging” them. One priest had to flee the country after receiving death threats.

255 persecuted Nicaraguan Catholics now live in exile. They include bishops, seminarians and women religious. Some have found refuge in Rome through the mediation of the Holy See.

According to the latest report by the NGO “Nicaragua Never Again,” the Ortega regime has shut down over 1,200 religious entities. The report describes the government’s actions as the worst repression of the Catholic Church in the history of Nicaragua.
