Thousands came to St Mary’s Cathedral with their families and friends, to enjoy the much-anticipated opening night of its annual Christmas at the Cathedral on 12 December.

As the sun slid beneath the horizon, among those present for the festive event were Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, and representatives from major sponsor Deicorp.

The iconic cathedral façade was transformed into a canvas of vibrant colours and intricate designs, bringing to life scenes from Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol.

Visitors gathered on the cathedral forecourt, many laying out picnic blankets and enjoying treats from the nearby food stalls, which served everything from hot chocolate to festive sweets.

The program began with a performance by Charlie Chech, whose voice filled the night with well-loved carols, prompting everyone to sing along.

Archbishop Fisher chatted with people, as he mingled freely with the crowd.

“Over the last decade and a half, Christmas at the Cathedral has grown into Sydney’s favourite Christmas event bringing together families, Sydneysiders and visitors from all over the world,” he said

Children were especially delighted by the family-friendly activities, including face-painting, food and the ghosts from Dicken’s story of Christmases past, present and future.

When asked about what their favourite part of Christmas was, many children replied, “presents, family, and Mum’s food.”

As the evening culminated in a spectacular light and sound show, the crowd’s collective awe reminded everyone of the beauty of coming together during the holiday season.

“I’ve been wanting to bring the kids along, and tonight was the perfect night,” said Theresa from St Luke’s parish in Revesby.

“It’s so exciting to see the families here together, getting ready to celebrate the birth of our Lord and getting into the Christmas spirit.”

Christmas at the Cathedral promises to be a highlight of Sydney’s festive calendar, and the opening night has set a shining precedent for the celebrations to come.

Christmas at the Cathedral will be on 12-25 December 2024, from 5.30 pm till 10.30 pm every night.
