During August, the Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) sports team has delivered an incredible eight athletic carnivals, held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre in Homebush, bringing together more than 6,000 student athletes from across the SCS sporting community.
All 147 SCS systemic schools were represented at the carnivals and they showcased the incredible breadth, diversity and talent within SCS. While competition and performance are an important part of athletics, these carnivals are about much more than results.
They provide students with opportunities to develop resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship, while building confidence and a strong sense of belonging through healthy competition.
The carnivals also play an important role in strengthening school communities. Students, teachers and families come together to celebrate achievement, encourage participation and create positive memories that contribute to wellbeing, school pride and a lifelong love of physical activity.
“Seeing every school in our system represented across eight athletic carnivals highlights the important role sport plays in bringing our school communities together,” said supervisor of sport Sean Mullaly.
“These events create memorable experiences that support student wellbeing, develop character, and inspire lifelong engagement in physical activity.”
For some families, the carnivals were very much a family affair, with the Bates siblings producing outstanding performances across primary and secondary competitions.
Twelve-year-old Xavier Bates from St Christopher’s Panania enjoyed a remarkable Conference 4 carnival, winning the Boys 12–13 years 1500m in 4:56.80 and the 800m in 2:18.80—both new conference 4 records.
He also finished second in the Boys 12–13 years 200m race. His younger sister Isla, aged 10, was equally impressive, winning the Girls 8–10 years 1500m in 5:26.91 and the 800m in 2:41.76, breaking her own conference 4 records from last year. Isla also claimed second place in the Girls 10 years 100m and Girls 8–10 200m.
The family success continued with Charlotte Bates, representing Mount St Joseph, Milperra in the Conference 4 Secondary Athletics Carnival. Charlotte won the Girls 15 years 1500m, 800m and 200m, while also finishing second in the 400m.
These performances are a wonderful example of the talent, dedication and passion for sport that exists across SCS. We look forward to following their results in the Catholic Schools NSW Pathways.
As the school athletics preliminaries draw to a close, the eight carnivals have once again demonstrated that sport is a powerful way to connect students and schools, celebrate achievement and build a stronger SCS community.
