What began in 2022 with just six pioneering teams has now grown into one of the most uplifting sporting fixtures on the Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) calendar.
On Thursday, 19 September 2025, the SCS Goalball Gala Day welcomed 31 teams, showcasing remarkable growth in participation since its inception.
Goalball was the first sport introduced in the SCS All Abilities Program, a program that set out to make it possible for students of all abilities to experience the joy of sport.
For too many young people with disabilities, being part of a school representative sports team has been out of reach for far too long. This program is changing that reality by providing opportunities, creating awareness and connections, and building a culture where all students can participate.
The program’s mission is simple yet powerful: to promote social inclusion, give students a sense of belonging, build self-esteem, and foster both courage and a love of the game. Goalball is uniquely suited to this vision.
Originally developed for athletes who are blind or vision impaired, all players wear eyeshades to ensure fairness. Teams of three roll a ball with bells inside into their opponent’s net, defending from their hands and knees. The result is a game that demands teamwork, trust, and resilience, while opening doors for students who might otherwise be sidelined.

One of this year’s most inspiring stories is that of Aryan, a Year 9 student whose talent has been developed through the program and who is now part of the Australian Youth Squad.
“Aryan is not just taking part, he’s excelling,” said Anna Turnbull, Specialist: Sport (All Abilities) at Sydney Catholic Schools.
“His passion and commitment show how quickly young people can thrive when they’re given the right opportunities. We’re making sure students like Aryan not only feel included but can see a future in sport at higher levels.”
The All Abilities Program has grown far larger than goalball since its inception. Today, SCS offers a range of sports, including Wheelchair Basketball, Oztag, Football, Tee-ball, European Handball, Athletics and Swimming, with more than 2,000 students anticipated to be involved in SCS throughout 2025.
The program encourages students to ‘have a go’ in a safe and supportive environment, where they can build resilience, confidence, and lasting friendships. What matters most isn’t necessarily the scoreline, but the opportunity to share their love of sport and the excitement of being part of something greater.
