Inspired by the Holy Spirit, specifically by the catechists of Holy Spirit Parish in North Ryde, the parish of St Michael’s Meadowbank celebrated its first-ever Mass for public school students undertaking Special Religious Education (SRE).
“For some time our parish catechists have been considering the idea of organising an event to personally meet the parents of our SRE students,” said Cynthia Matusiak, catechist coordinator at Meadowbank.
“When our CCD Area Faith Education Officer, Anita Lee, informed me about the successful Mass organised by the catechists at Holy Spirit North Ryde for their SRE students last year, I felt that this was a divine inspiration.
“I proposed this idea to our catechists during our initial catechists’ meeting for the 2025 school year in February.
“Once the team reached consensus, I consulted with Fr Emmanuel Seo to determine a suitable date.”
The Mass held in May was followed by a supper provided by volunteers and attended by 24 children with their parents and siblings.
“I told the catechists that I would be happy if we could attract even just five students to this event, so I was so thrilled at the turnout,” Cynthia said.
“Fr Seo celebrated the service with grace, supported by two dedicated male catechists who also serve as regular acolytes.
“Our well-prepared student volunteers took on the important roles of reading the scripture, reciting the psalms, leading the heartfelt prayers of the faithful, and offering the bread and wine during offertory. Fr Seo delivered an inspiring homily that encouraged the children to participate and respond enthusiastically to his questions. The church choir enriched the atmosphere with uplifting music for the entrance, reflection and the recessional.
“It was a beautifully conducted liturgy that united the SRE community in faith.
“Now, we face an important challenge: How can we significantly increase attendance each year and deepen our engagement with the families involved?
“Together, we can form a strong partnership to grow and thrive the faith formation of their children.
When the time comes, we will confidently trust in the Holy Spirit for guidance and inspiration once again.”
