A Sydney parish in the inner west has launched a monthly drop-in centre aimed at reducing isolation and stigma for people with mental health and other challenges.
The first gathering of Curious Grace held at St Brendan’s church hall in Annandale on 29 June followed the success of the first centre launched at St Canice’s parish, Rushcutters Bay, in March 2024.
The Curious Grace model offers a welcoming space where people can access creative activities and compassionate conversation.
With parishioners on hand to offer empathy, understanding, and support, it is a safe place for anyone seeking connection, regardless of their background or circumstances.
On offer are activities including painting, craft, knitting and crochet, chess, and puzzles and games. A reading library is also available, and a free morning tea.
The community initiative is supported by the Archdiocese of Sydney’s Justice and Peace Office and aims to normalise conversations about mental health while embedding support within the fabric of local communities.
“We want St Brendan and St Michael’s to be a place for refreshment and rest, not just for those who seek solace in liturgy but all who live in this community,” said parish priest Fr Matthew Meagher.
Cathie Edlington, the St Vincent De Paul Society’s Rozelle Regional President, said there is a growing need for accessible, community-based companionship and support.
“We know the cost-of-living crisis is contributing to increased demand on charitable services in our community,” she said.
“Not only are people struggling with hidden poverty and housing instability but there are many other physical and mental health challenges that contribute to feelings of social disconnection and isolation. We hope this initiative goes some way to addressing this need.”
Organisers hope the new centre will serve as a model for other communities seeking to address loneliness, isolation, and health challenges in a compassionate and inclusive way.
The new drop-in centre will operate on the last Sunday of every month from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at St Brendan’s Church Hall, located at the corner of Johnston and Collins Streets, Annandale. The venue is easily accessible and provides a comfortable setting for community engagement.
