Ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s 26-27 September visit to Lourdes, the shrine has fully covered the mosaics created by former Jesuit artist Father Marko Rupnik, according to sanctuary spokesperson David Torchala.
The coverings, installed by 18 September, will remain in place after the papal visit as part of what officials describe as a long-term measure while discussions continue about a permanent solution.
The mosaics on the facade of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary were commissioned in 2008, years before allegations against Father Rupnik became public. The priest-mosaicist faces accusations from more than 20 women and is the subject of an ongoing canonical trial.
Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes, who initially ordered a partial covering in March 2025, said concern for abuse survivors guided his decision. He told OSV News that some victims felt the mosaics created a barrier to visiting the sanctuary and seeking healing at Lourdes.
The full covering has been welcomed by advocates, including abuse survivor supporter Antonia Sobocki of LOUD Fence. She said she “cried with relief” when she learned of the decision, calling it “a gift of care and solidarity for millions of people who have been impacted by this grave injury.”
Pope Leo is scheduled to arrive 26 September and celebrate Mass 27 September near the Lourdes grotto, one of the world’s most important Catholic pilgrimage sites.
