In a continuation of its mission to bring sacred music to Sydney’s Catholic community, Artes Christi Australia will present an evening of profound Lenten music at St Thomas of Canterbury Church in Lewisham on Saturday, 8 March.

The concert, featuring the organisation’s chamber choir, will guide listeners through a musical meditation on Christ’s Passion, incorporating works spanning centuries of sacred music tradition.

Centrepiece performances include Pergolesi’s moving Stabat Mater and Bruckner’s contemplative Christus Factus Est, alongside William Byrd’s Miserere Mei, and selections from Missa Regensis by Ugis Praulins.

This offering follows Artes Christi’s highly successful 2024, including the “In Memoriam” concert featuring Faure’s Requiem in November with more than 200 people attending and Carols for Peace concert held at Sydney Town Hall in December, which drew approximately 1,300 congregants.

The Christmas service, building on previous years’ success, helped raise $20,000 for Aid to the Church in Need, matching their 2023 fundraising achievement of $20,000 for the same cause.

The concert demonstrates Artes Christi’s ongoing commitment to presenting sacred music of the highest calibre while fostering spiritual reflection and community engagement.

“Our Lenten concert offers a unique opportunity for spiritual reflection through the power of sacred music,” said Chorus Master for Artes Christi Michael Murphy.

“Each piece has been carefully selected to help listeners journey deeper into the mysteries of Christ’s passion during this sacred season.”

The intimate setting of St Thomas of Canterbury Church provides an ideal acoustic and spiritual space for this program of contemplative sacred music. The historic church’s architecture and atmosphere will enhance the works being performed.

“We are pleased to once again work with Artes Christi, who have been great supporters of our work” said National Director of ACN Aus/NZ Bernard Toutounji.

“Last year’s Carols for Peace proved to be an outstanding success in raising funds for our projects in Ukraine and the Holy Land, areas which have experienced a significant amount of persecution in recent years.”

Tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for concessions, and $75 for families.
