Pope Francis and the President of the State of Palestine have condemned terrorism and called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
This was stated in the statement that the Vatican distributed after the half-hour meeting between the two leaders.
It was stated that the two-state solution is the most appropriate. This, says the Holy See, must be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy.
In addition, it was insisted that Jerusalem must maintain its special status and that it must be a space for encounter and friendship between Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
One of the most striking gifts was the one the Palestinian President gave the pope: a painting showing the pope praying in front of the wall of Bethlehem. It recreates a moment of the pope in in 2014, during his trip to the Holy Land.
