Even in retirement 77-year-old Fr Bob Hayes embodies the spirit of true priesthood.

Known affectionately as “Father Bob the Builder,” Fr Hayes did not just build churches; he built community.

As a father to many parishes throughout his dedicated life, he has answered the call of his communities with a selfless devotion and unwavering commitment that has enriched the faith of countless individuals.

Yet, as he and the other 58 retired priests supported by the Priests’ Retirement Foundation (PRF) navigate their golden years, they now need our help.

“I think we [retired priests] would be struggling if it wasn’t for the PRF,” shared Fr Hayes, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing support.

“The PRF does important work—some of us have close relatives who may wish to help support us, but they have their own families to look after as well. This kind of care for retired priests is truly needed. Thank you to all who support the PRF.”

“The PRF is one of the most beautiful ministries of the Archdiocese of Sydney,” emphasises Tania Penny from the Catholic Development and Fundraising Office.

“It is our opportunity to support those who have paved the way for our faith.”

Penny is at the forefront of a vital initiative to raise funds for retired priests like Fr Hayes, ensuring they have access to necessary accommodations, healthcare, and overall assistance.

During his tenure, Fr Hayes served parishes in various locations—Panania, Cronulla, Lurnea, Asquith, Blacktown, Lane Cove, Five Dock, Mosman, Preston, Austral, Flemington, and beyond—fostering faith wherever he went.

In Five Dock, when faced with the challenge of necessary building works, Fr Hayes rose to the occasion. He successfully renovated the school administration block, added a multipurpose building, established new classrooms, created a library, and even developed a remembrance wall and garden.

When he caught the attention of the late Cardinal Clancy, who blessed these enhancements, the Cardinal affectionately dubbed him “Father Bob the Builder.”

After 13 fruitful years in Five Dock, Fr Hayes continued to leave his mark in Austral by nurturing a thriving school community that now serves more than 1,100 students and anticipates an additional 1,300 children soon.

He recalls fondly his enriching experiences, particularly in the busy Blacktown parish where he fostered youth engagement and a welcoming space for young families.

“I remember a young mum who came to me crying one day. I made her a cup of tea and simply listened,” he fondly recalls.

“Today these retired Fathers are not just leaders in faith; they are now our family,” urges Tania.

“Today, I ask you to pray and generously support our retired priests. Your donation today will directly benefit their wellbeing.

“Together, we can ensure our beloved Fathers receive the care they deserve, while preserving their legacy of compassion and service.”
