A flourishing sacred music program at the Catholic parishes of Bondi is drawing growing congregations, talented young musicians and worshippers from across Sydney to the St Patrick’s church 10am Sunday Mass.

Led by director of music Michael Murphy and supported by parish priest Fr Robbie, the program has built upon foundations established in previous years and continues to expand through a strong commitment to the church’s liturgical tradition.

What visitors encounter each Sunday is a near-full church, a well-served sanctuary and music carefully chosen to support and elevate the liturgy.

At the heart of the program is a commitment to sacred music as envisioned by the church’s liturgical documents, which call for music that is prayerful, artistically worthy and closely connected to the action of the Mass.

Gregorian chant provides a foundation, complemented by polyphony and sacred choral works spanning centuries.

Music by composers including Palestrina, Byrd, Tallis, Victoria and Lassus regularly features alongside works by Mozart, Handel and Buxtehude, as well as select contemporary compositions. Importantly, the music program extends beyond the choir loft.

Congregational participation remains a defining feature of the 10am Mass, with strong hymn singing and confident participation in the Ordinary of the Mass, including the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. The choir itself is largely made up of young people, including choral scholars and emerging professional musicians.

Their involvement has helped establish a standard of music-making rarely encountered in a parish setting. The growth of the music ministry has also had an impact beyond Sunday worship.

Following the Bondi attack in 2025, members of the parish community assembled at short notice to form a choir for a public gathering, standing alongside the local Jewish community in a gesture of solidarity and prayer.

The response to the parish’s musical life has been positive, with many young Catholics drawn to a form of worship that is lively and deeply rooted in tradition.

The parish’s music ministry will next present Gloria, a major sacred music concert at St Anne’s Catholic Church, Bondi, on 17 July.

The event will bring together leading Sydney ensembles and an expanded choir of more than 40 voices, offering audiences an opportunity to experience the musical excellence that has become a hallmark of parish life at Bondi.
