An original musical exploring the life and modern-day relevance of St George will be staged at St Peter’s Parish, Surry Hills, from 8–11 October.
Courage: The Legend of St George and the Dragon, a collaboration between the parish and Bright Stars Production Company, presents the saint’s example as a martyr and its relevance to Christians today.
As divisions between Christians and the Roman Empire grew during the third and fourth centuries, St George took a stand for the truth – a stand that cost him his life.
Writer and director Brigid Viera believes his example is important for the faithful to consider at a time of growing despair, division and conflict.
“In a world not too different to our own, St George’s courageous decision to act with integrity, no matter the cost, shows that the truth about life and love is simpler than we often make it,” Viera said.
“We don’t need to know everything, only enough to make the next right decision—small steps leave the largest legacy.”

The musical aims to look beyond the troubles of the 21st century to reveal a biblical truth: there is nothing new under the sun.
“We often take ourselves too seriously—the world needs more laughter,” Viera said.
“No matter who is ruling politically or economically, they’re nothing new, and it’s not the biggest story in our lives.”
St George’s courageous faith in the face of evil has inspired Emelina Phillips to trust in God as she navigates the demands of the lead role of Sabra.
“I was finding some aspects of what I would have to do as an actress to really sell the character challenging,” Phillips said.
“I just had to take it to prayer, and I felt God inviting me to trust the other actors and the process more.
“I think we all can find in ourselves areas where we don’t want to step out. I had to come out of that little safe hiding place, and I’ve experienced growth.”

The production continues St Peter’s Parish’s long history of supporting the arts, parish priest Fr John Macdonald said.
“A significant part of the historical ethos of St Peter’s Parish Surry Hills has been the promotion of excellence in sacred music and the performing arts,” he said.
“Courage: The Legend of St George and the Dragon personifies the parish’s particular support and promotion of young performers.
“The various theatrical and musical genres which the parish accommodates are carefully chosen to strengthen the Catholic culture of the parish and also as an avenue of Catholic evangelical outreach to the performing arts community and wider society.”
Four performances will be staged from 8–11 October in the parish’s historic 1880 Hall. Tickets cost $35 and are available at TryBooking.
