World Youth Day 2008 was a moment of profound joy, unity, and renewal for the Catholic Church in Australia. Now, 17 years later, we are blessed with a second opportunity to encounter the symbols that inspired a generation.

On 4 December, following the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Melbourne, the World Youth Day Cross and Icon will be welcomed once again in Sydney at St Mary’s Cathedral.

This visit is more than a symbolic return, it is an invitation to rekindle the spirit of WYD and to inspire a new generation of young people in their faith. These sacred signs of hope and love continue to move hearts around the world, and now they come again to stand at the heart of our archdiocese.

Originally entrusted to the youth of the world by Pope St John Paul II, the cross, affectionately known as the “Pilgrim Cross,” is a simple wooden structure nearly four  metres tall.

It has travelled across nations, offering a striking and powerful sign of Christ’s presence and the church’s missionary call. Alongside it travels the Icon of Our Lady “Salus Populi Romani” (Protectress of the Roman People).

The original is kept in the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome, inviting today’s pilgrims to place their hopes and prayers into Mary’s maternal care. For centuries, this icon has been a source of comfort, strength, and guidance in moments of crisis and thanksgiving.

Both the cross and icon are reminders of God’s eternal love and Mary’s constant  intercession.

For those who may not have had the chance to attend a World Youth Day, this is a rare opportunity to encounter its spirit right here in Sydney.

Whether you are young or old, devout or seeking, we invite you to come and pray, reflect, and find hope before these powerful signs of our faith.

You are invited to join us at St Mary’s Cathedral on 4 December for 5.30pm Mass with Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP as we welcome these symbols of our Catholic identity and global communion.

Come and see how the spirit of World Youth Day continues to inspire faith, hope, and love in the hearts of God’s people today.
