Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi of Bologna, Pope Francis' envoy for peace in Ukraine, returned to Moscow in mid-October for meetings with Russian government officials and leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church.

After having visited a year and a half ago, Cardinal Zuppi has returned to Russia for the second time. He does so again in his capacity as the pope's special envoy for the peace mission in Ukraine, an assignment from Pope Francis that began in 2023.

The Vatican has not stopped in its efforts to foster dialogue in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. On 14 August, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the President of the Italian Bishops' Conference, had a phone call with Li Hui, Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Eurasian Affairs.
