By contemplating Christ’s face, especially in his suffering, we recognise the seriousness of sin and the depths of divine mercy and we are called to imitate his humility and charity. To contemplate the face of Christ is to enter into deeper communion with him.

“Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God” (Mt 5:8). It must, then, be possible to became pure of heart and thus to see God. Perhaps we can say that to be “pure in heart” means that internally we have regained the original state of cleanness, openness, and innocence which we were intended to have.

I believe we come to Carmel for our own reasons and stay for God’s reasons. Many Carmelites live outside the walls of friaries and monasteries....
