Two of the most important tenets of the Catholic faith are the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and the pope as the successor of Peter, who unites and guides the church, Pope Leo XIV said.

Pope Leo XIV commended the Knights of Columbus for uniting Catholic men in prayer and fraternity, while extending "generous service to vulnerable populations," as the fraternal organization holds its 143rd Supreme Convention in Washington.

The Knights of Columbus are inviting the faithful to take part in a novena to the Sacred Heart dedicated to the intentions of Pope Leo XIV.

As the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine approaches 24 February, the Knights of Columbus called for prayers " for hope for Ukraine" and launched a novena 15 February to pray for widows, youth, orphans, veterans and all those affected by the full-scale Russian invasion.

The "days of easy faith are over," and a "new generation of Catholic men" are needed in the church, said the head of a global Catholic men's society at its annual gathering.

Praising the 2.1 million members of the Knights of Columbus for their faith, charity and defence of life, Pope Francis asked them to continue to pray and work for peace.
