All Saints Parish, Liverpool, put its grandparents and elderly parishioners front and centre this past weekend, marking World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly with a full program of celebration, music and connection.

The theme of this year's World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly draws on a powerful promise from Scripture: "I will never forget you" (Is 49:15). In his message for the sixth celebration of the day, Pope Leo XIV reminded Catholics that this promise should shape how all treat the older adults in their lives.

Pope Leo XIV has chosen "I will never forget you" (Is 49:15) as the theme for the Sixth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, the Vatican Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life announced 10 February.

"Blessed are those who have not lost hope" is the theme for the fifth World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly which will be observed in the Catholic Church 27 July.

Pope Francis established a day for grandparents and the elderly in 2021 to be celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July to highlight the plight of loneliness, neglect and insecurity many of them experience, which he addressed during the Angelus this year. 

On Sunday 28 July our elderly, especially our grandparents, are celebrated globally with the inaugural World Grandparents and The Elderly Day. “We must let older people know that they are needed and that they are essential to building the world of tomorrow,” Pope Francis declared.

This World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, we are asked by the Holy Father to turn our attention especially to those among us who grow old alone. As Francine and Byron Pirola write, Christians have a special duty to accompany each other as we age.
