For years, Alison De Sousa has heard countless stories from young Catholics about how difficult the dating scene is in Sydney and wanted something to be done to fix the culture.
Many wanted dating to return to the way it once was and the way as Catholics are called to date – with intentionality.
Now Alison is one of the organisers of The Ark Socials, a monthly night out for young Catholics who are intentional about finding a spouse.
“In conversations with both men and women, a number of common challenges around dating consistently emerge”, she says.
“Many men speak of the fear of rejection, combined with the pressure to approach ‘the right way’, and the concern that initiating conversation may be perceived as intrusive or unwelcome.
“On the other hand, many women share the difficulty of rarely being asked out at all, and the sense that they must act flirtatiously simply to gain attention or signal interest.
“The Ark seeks to address these concerns by creating a relaxed, intentional environment where everyone is present with a shared purpose of potentially meeting their future spouse.
“In this setting, participants understand that taking initiative and being open to connection is both expected and encouraged.”
The Ark, aimed at single Catholics aged 21–35, will begin with a social night on 28 February 2026 on the grounds of St Christopher’s Holsworthy.
Numbers will be limited to an even number of men and women, and on offer will be delicious canapes, live music, a cocktail bar and plenty of opportunities to meet other like-minded Catholics.
“Our hope is that The Ark serves as a space where God can bring couples together for his glory,” said Alison.
“Just as importantly, we pray that it helps foster a healthy culture of growth – one where men feel encouraged and confident to take initiative, and where women actively support and affirm them in that step of faith.”
