Year 7 student Scout Koernig has completed a remarkable cross country season, winning three major championships before earning selection to represent New South Wales at the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships in September.
The Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College, Burraneer student capped off her outstanding campaign with a gold medal in the Girls Under 12 division at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships at the Sydney Equestrian Centre.
Competing against more than 100 athletes from Catholic, government and independent schools, Scout completed the 3km course in 10 minutes and 46 seconds to claim the state title.
Her victory completed a clean sweep of the season after earlier winning both the Sydney Catholic Schools Cross Country Championships and the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Cross Country Championships. Remarkably, all three races were run on the same 3km course, with Scout improving her time on each occasion.
The latest success has earned Scout selection in the NSW team for the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships, which will also be held at the Sydney Equestrian Centre later this year.
Before then, she will turn her attention to the track, representing Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College at the upcoming Sydney Catholic Schools Conference Carnival.
She will compete in events ranging from the 100m sprint to the 1500m, with hopes of qualifying for both the Sydney Catholic Schools and NSWCCC athletics championships.
Principal Christine Harding praised Scout’s achievements and dedication.
“Scout’s cross country wins and her remarkable improvement over the year have been impressive,” Harding said.
“She embodies what it means to be a Mercy girl, striving for the value of excellence and demonstrating resilience, focus, and a deep commitment to continual improvement.”
Outside school, Scout trains with Run Crew under coach Danette Shenan, a three-time Australian representative at the World Cross Country Championships who has competed internationally for both Canada and Australia.
Scout first discovered her passion for running through Little Athletics after representing St Aloysius Catholic Primary School, Cronulla, in athletics. She credits her success to trusting the training process and continually striving to improve her personal best each time she races.
With the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games firmly in her sights, Scout draws inspiration from her coach as well as Australian middle-distance stars Jess Hull and Abbey Caldwell.
After an unbeaten cross country season, the young athlete will now look to continue her impressive rise on the national stage.
