Sydney is about to be swept up in an encounter with the world’s most passionate and influential voice on St John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, Dr Christopher West.

Known globally as the torchbearer for this profound teaching, Dr West returns this January to ignite hearts, renew marriages, and answer our deepest questions about what it means to be human, to love and to be loved.

“It’s a delight for me to come back,” he told The Catholic Weekly.

“I’ve been given a particular gift and charism, to translate the dense scholarship of John Paul II into language, categories, analogies, art that that communicates it in in a way that lay people can receive it and I intend, to my dying breath, to continue to share it.”

Dr West, whose work has reached hundreds of thousands around the globe, will deliver a major talk, ‘Love in the Flesh’ at St Kevin’s in Eastwood on 17 January. From 18–23 January he will lead a five-day Head and Heart Immersion course, offering a unique live formation experience for Catholics seeking deeper meaning and authentic joy in today’s challenging world.

Participants in Dr West’s courses routinely describe the experience as “mind-blowing”, “life-changing”, and “deeply enriching.”

They speak of marriages renewed, parenting transformed, and daily conversations invigorated with faithful confidence.

“I’ve been sharing this message for 30 years and the number one response I get is precisely what I thought when I first discovered John Paul’s teaching: how is it possible that I was raised in the church and never heard this? I’ve been Catholic my whole life, and I’ve never heard this? “

Dr West promises at his ‘Love in the Flesh’ talk on 17 January to “unfold for everyone the very logic of Christianity”.

“And what I will be demonstrating is that to be a Christian is to become another Christ bearer in the world. We are called to open, to receive God’s love, conceive God’s love and bear it forth in the flesh. Love in the flesh. This is what Christianity is,” Dr West revealed.

For Dr West, this visit is much more than another tour; it’s an opportunity to continue carrying the torch of St John Paul II’s groundbreaking catechesis.

His five-day immersion course between 18-23 January, offers not just academic learning but total formation – time for prayer, community, the sacraments, and absorbing St John Paul II’s thought at every level.

“You will come away with a vision of human life and human love, and what it means to be Catholic, what the sacraments are, what the church is, who Christ is, what the universe means, you will come away with a vision that will astound you, and it will breathe hope into your life.

“It will give you wings. It will open your eyes to the beauty of God’s plan revealed all around us. You’ll see flowers in a new way. You’ll enjoy a good beer in a new way. You’ll see movies in a new way. You’ll hear music in a new way,” he promises.

At the heart of St John Paul II’s Theology of the Body is the truth of our identity – created male and female in the image and likeness of God.

In a world where clarity about identity and vocation feels threatened by rapid social change and confusion, Dr West’s message offers a lifeline.

“This is an answer to the crisis of our times, and there is an answer to the deepest, and I mean the deepest, cry of our hearts. We’re made for more than what the world is holding out for us. You and I and every human being on the planet, we exist for one reason, for one reason to share, to participate in the eternal life, giving, love and ecstasy of God.”
